Gerald A. Doering took an interest in two-wheeled vehicles early on and purchased his first motorcycle, a 1929 Indian Scout in 1947. Hoping for a job at a motorcycle dealership that moved from Newburgh, NY to Florida, Mr. Doering rode his 1929 Indian to Florida. When the job didn’t pan out, he rode back to Newburgh, NY, and started an electrical contracting business in the 1950s. Mr. Doering continued to collect Indian motorcycles over the years and collected Indians from every year of their manufacture (1901-1953), with the exception of the first year of production. Mr. Doering’s interest in motorcycles was shared with his son,Ted, and in 1971, the father and son team started a wholesale motorcycle parts business, V-Twin Manufacturing, in New Windsor, NY. The success of the company made it possible for the father and son to expand their motorcycle collection. Ted Doering enjoyed building choppers in the late 1960’s and collected both custom and original Harley motorcycles and memorabilia. Ted’s motorcycle collection grew over the years and in 2010, he began putting together the museum that is currently located at 250 Lake Street in Newburgh, in what was once Miron Lumber. The collection features over 600 motorcycles from more than a century, ranging from hill climbers, Harleys from throughout the years, Military and Police motorcycles, Choppers, Japanese motorcycles, British motorcycles, and motorcycles from American manufacturers from years past, such as Pierce, Thor, Flying Merkel, Reading Standard, Cleveland, etc. Gerald Doering’s extensive collection of Indians joined Ted’s collection and is now displayed in the museum’s Indian Room, featuring the world’s most complete Indian Timeline. Ted Doering presently serves as the museum’s Director. Motorcyclepedia opened on April 16, 2011, and has been granted a Provisional Charter by the Board of Regents for the State of New York. We feature over 450 motorcycles along with photographs, posters, memorabilia, machinery, and other things related to bikes. There are several galleries including The Indian Timeline, Chopper City, The Circa Timeline, Fast from the Past, Harley-Davidsons, American Motorcycle Foundation’s Gallery, and the Wall of Death. We have motorcycles for any kind of fan, ranging from the 1916 Iver Johnson to the recreation of the Captain America chopper from Easy Rider, to the amazing creations of Arlen Ness.
